CHAPTER ACTIVITIES
2011 - 2010
We cordially invite area organists, organ
enthusiasts, and the general public to attend a variety of
organ-related activities, which are sponsored by our organization
throughout the year. Most of the events are free.
More information will be provided in our monthly newsletters.
2011-2012 Activities September 17
(Saturday) - Utah Valley
Chapter Opening Event, “Pedals, Pipes & Pizza,” Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to
noon, Provo Central Stake Center, 1200 W. 500 N. Print off the flyer prepared by Miranda
Wilcox to post in your chapels, and invite youth pianists in your
congregations to attend this event. Let them know they will be welcome to
play a piano piece or hymn on the Bigelow mechanical action pipe organ. Please make sure that any youth you invite has a ride to
the event (either you, their parents, or their piano teacher). Contact Susan Morris with the number of youth
and escorts who will be attending (by 9/14/11), so that she may make sure
there will be enough pizza on hand to satisfy all who come. October 7 (Friday) -
The 21st Century Member Recital and Don Cook
Recognition, 7:30 p.m., 1006 E. 200 S., Spanish Fork In addition to having an evening to honor Dr. Cook, our Dean, Florence, would like a program of organ pieces from
you to illustrate what the organ means to each of us in the 21st century. She
is hoping for a broad spectrum of composers/time periods. So pull out a
favorite piece or start practicing a new one. If interested in performing,
please contact Sheri Peterson. Available practice on this Wicks organ (stop list
attached) are: Tuesday, October 4, from 4 to 10 p.m. Thursday, October 6, from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, October 7, from noon to 7:00 p.m. To secure a practice time, call, text, or email Jack Stoneman to set up a
time for him to meet you at the church to open the doors. If anyone
needs a time other than what is listed above, arrangements can be made. Here is a link

- 20th Century Utah Organists – An
Evening with Rulon Christiansen Rulon Christiansen (DMA,
Eastman School of Music) will discuss important 20th-century
Utah organists, particularly Alexander Schreiner and J. J. Keeler, both of
whom were seminal figures in Utah (and general LDS) organ culture. He will
share his experiences as a student of both as well as his knowledge of
Vierne, based on his own research as well as his “second generation tutelage”
through Schreiner, who had studied with Vierne. The location of this event is
a stake center at 450 S. 100 W, Orem. December January 21
(Saturday) - January Chapter Meeting – “The
Organ: Acoustics & Architecture”/St. Mark’s Tour, 10:00 am, St. Mark’s
Episcopal Cathedral, 231 E. 100 S., SLC February 9 (Thursday) - February Chapter
Meeting – “What Makes Romantic Music Romantic?” Joan Stevens will pre-view for our chapter
SLCAGO lecture-recital at her home, Thursday, 7:30 p.m., 2996 Cherokee Lane,
Provo March 23 (Friday) - Bach Member Recital/Potluck - Friday, 7:30 p.m., Provo Central Stake
Center, 5th N. 12th W., Provo (start learning or reviewing a Bach piece to
share) April 21 (Saturday)
- Super Saturday - Clay Christiansen will be the
keynote speaker (more info to follow) May - May Chapter Meeting – “The American Organist” ________________ INFORMAL

Setchell Organ Recital, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., Tabernacle on Temple Square, SLC High School Age AGO Organ Competition January 28-29, 2012 University of North Carolina School of the Arts/Salem
College/Winston-Salem, NC Chapter for the first time is offering an AGO High
School Organ Competition (click
here for application form). This is an opportunity for young organists to perform,
get acquainted with other students with their same interests, and to
experience a wonderful weekend of activities including a recital by Salem
College keyboard faculty and students, a workshop by world-renowned keyboard
technique pedagogue, Barbara Lister-Sink and Alexander Technique teacher,
Susan Perkins. Private lessons are also offered by Timothy Olsen, DMA, Kenan Professor of Organ, University of North Carolina
School of the Arts (timothy.jon.olsen@gmail.com) The deadline for the application (received) is
January 13, 2012. No audition CD is required. (See application attached) Organ Historical Society Convention in Chicago
July 8-13, 2012 July 2012 may seem a long way off, but it’s not too far
away to plan for a week exploring the world of unique, eclectic, and
historically significant organs in the Chicago metro area with the Organ
